Perestera Ancient and Medieval Fortress – Building of the Year, Bulgaria 2014
The conservation, restoration, and public opening of the Perestera Ancient and Medieval Fortress—located near Saint Petka Hill, close to Peshtera—represent one of Bulgaria’s most significant cultural heritage initiatives. Designed by Structural Design, this project exemplifies our commitment to restoring monuments of historic prominence across the country.
The restoration process required comprehensive civil, geotechnical, and structural surveys, not only of the fortress itself but also of its surrounding area. Detailed assessments considered local and regional topography, geological and geotechnical conditions, hydrology, and climate.
By studying traditional construction techniques passed down through generations and blending them with innovative modern solutions, Structural Design ensured the preservation of both the fortress’s physical integrity and authentic aesthetic. Our approach guarantees that its historic character and functional mechanisms will endure for future generations—enhancing the site’s resilience, accessibility, and visual appeal.
The Perestera Fortress restoration project received the prestigious Building of the Year 2014 award, granted annually to outstanding Bulgarian buildings. Our team is deeply proud to have contributed to preserving a piece of history and giving it new life—one of aesthetic beauty, structural longevity, durability, and renewed public appreciation for this timeless cultural landmark.
